初めて南米で演奏したとき。3年前だね。ブラジルのモルンビという世界で2番目に大きいスタジアムで、2夜連続のコンサートをやらなきゃだった。合計25万人近い観客の前での演奏、一夜12万人。完売だった。

■ いちばん恥ずかしかった瞬間
ガールフレンドが2人（3人だっけ？）が同じライブに来ちゃった時。シャツを脱いで、ひどいドレスを着て、髪を長くしていた頃のことは思い出すのも恥ずかしい。数日前、イタリアでボーイ・ジョージに会ったのは面白かった。彼は当時の僕らの大ファンだったと言うんだ。僕とフレディがナイツブリッジをめかしこんで歩いていた頃、彼はきっと12歳だよ。

■ お住まいは？
地方に住んでるけど、そのうち街にも住む予定。ロサンゼルスではフラットじゃなく戸建に住んでるけど、あそこはあまり好きじゃない。イビサ島、ドイツ、スイスにも住んでる。家は5つ、いや6つかな。

■ポップ・クイズで理想のチームは？
デヴィッド・ボウイ、ロバート・プラント、ジョン・レノン。

■ フランキー・ゴーズ・トゥ・ハリウッドにクイーンが影響を与えたと思う？
どうだろう。フレディがレザーを見つけたわけじゃないし、そっちはたいして独創的でもなかった。でも、彼はいつもレザーを着てまわってたし、レザーを広めるのに一役買ったとは思う。僕らは彼らに影響を与えるほどヒップではないよ。カッコ悪いの、ここ何年も！そのせいで77年にセックス・ピストルズとうまくやれなかったんだ。ヤツらはそうはいわないけどね。

■ マスコミに書かれた最悪な事は？
たくさんありすぎて選べないよ。そうだな〜。ローリング・ストーン誌の記事はまじで強烈だった。ミュージシャンとしての僕らの技量については、不当でいわれのないものだった。

■ 好きなクルマ
アストン・マーチンだけど、今日はエンジンがかからなかった！あとは、アメリカにシボレーと、レンジローバーが2台ある。

■ ラジオ・ガガ とはどういう意味ですか？
アメリカのMTV（ミュージック・テレビ）を見て、曲よりもビジュアルが重視されるようになってきたと感じて、この曲を作った。そんなわけだから、この曲にビデオを作らなきゃならないって状況は、皮肉がきいているよね。ビデオなしで世界的に成功させるのはかなり難しいと言えるね。曲名？息子がラジオ・プー・プーと言って回ってたところから。それがラジオ・カカになり、ガガになった。

■ お子さんの名前は？
フェリックス。 3歳半だ。

■ 結婚してますか？
いや、ドミニクというガールフレンドがいる。

■ ペットは？
いない。飼えるほど、ひと所に長くとどまれないんだ。

■ 趣味
趣味の時間もないな。でも、時間があれば読書するよ。最後に読んだのは、アンソニー・バージェスの『Earthly Powers』（※未訳）。

■ クイーンという名前を考えたのは誰？
フレディだ。大きくて、短くて、シンプルな響きで、eが2つ入っている。あと、いろいろと曖昧な意味合いもあって、そこが気に入ったんだ。

■ 好きなバンドは？
シンプル・マインズは最高。あと、ビッグ・カントリーとU2もかなりいい。

■ デュランデュランのロジャー・テイラーと間違われたことは？
ない、いちども。

Roger Meddows-Tayfor.

■ BORN:
Kings Lynn. 26 July, 1949.

■ NICKNAME AT SCHOOL:
Captain. I was form captain in the first form. And Tich— I was a lot shorter then.

■ WORST JOB:
Dissecting bodies when studying dentistry from 1969 to 1970.

■ BIGGEST CONCERT EVER:
The first time we played South America. It was three years ago. We had to play two concerts on consecutive days in Morumbi, Brazil, at the second biggest stadium in the world. We played to nearly a quarter of a million people in all — 120,000 each night. It was a sell-out.

■ MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT:
When two girlfriends — or was it three? — turned up to the same gig. It's also embarrassing to think back to when we used to take our shirts off and wear dreadful dresses and have very long hair. It was funny when we met Boy George in Italy a couple of days ago. He Claims to have been a big fan of us in those days. He must have been twelve when me and Freddie used to swan around Knightsbridge dressed up to the nines.

■ WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
I live in the countryside here, soon to live in town as well. And I live in Los Angeles—A house not a flat—but I don't like it there mach. I also live in Ibiza, Germany and Switzerland. I've got about five, well it might be six. house.

■ YOUR IDEAL TEAM ON POP QUIZ?
David Bowie, Robert Plant and John Lennon.

■ DO YOU THINK QUEEN HAVE HAD ANY INFLUENCE ON FRANKE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD?
Possibly. Freddie didn't invent leather—he wasn't that innovative in that field— but he did used to walk around in it all the time and I'm sure he did a lot to promote it. Really I don't think we're hip enough to influence them. I think we've been uncool for years now! But it didn't stop us from getting on with the Sex Pistols in '77, even though they wouldn't admit it at the time.

■ WORST THING SAID ABOUT YOU IN THE PRESS?
There's so much to choose from. Let me think. A Rolling Stone piece was really vitriolic. It was nasty about our technical ability as musicians which is just unfair and untrue.

■ FAVOURITE CAR:
It was an Aston Martin but it didn't bloody well start today! I also own a Chevrolet which is in America, and two Range Rovers.

■ WHAT DOES "RADIO GAGA" MEAN?
Well I wrote it after watching a lot of MTV (Music Television) in America and it seems that visuals were becoming much more important than the song. Still it's very ironic that we had to make a video to go with it. I can tell you it's pretty difficult to be a success worldwide without a video. And the name? That came from my little boy who goes round saying radio pooh pooh. The changed into radio ka ka, and then to ga ga.

■ WHAT'S YOUR LITTLE BOY CALLED?
Felix. He's three-and-a-half.

■ ARE YOU MARRIED?
No, I've a girlfriend called Dominique.

■ ANY PETS?
No. Never in one place long enough to keep them.

■ HOBBIES:
No time for hobbies. But when I have, I like to read. The last book I read was Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess.

■ WHO THOUGHT OF THE NAME QUEEN?
Freddie. It sounded big, short and simple and it had two e's in it. It also got various ambiguous connotations which we liked.

■ FAVOURITE BANDS?
Simple Minds are great. I also quite like Big Country and U2.

■ DO YOU EVER GET MISTAKEN FOR ROGER TAYLOR OF DURAN DURAN.
No. Never.
